Moving Well: Why the Floor Matters

October 23, 2026

Most adults move through a narrow range: sit, stand, walk, repeat. Moving well is wider than that. It is getting down to the floor and up again without thinking about it, rolling, hanging, crawling, and falling without panic.

Why it matters

The floor is where most people’s movement vocabulary runs out. In Jiu-Jitsu you spend a lot of time there, but the benefit is not limited to grapplers. A body that can handle the floor, a fall or an awkward position tends to be more confident and, in my experience, less often surprised.

A simple way to start

  • Spend a few minutes a day moving on the floor: sit, change positions, roll onto your side, get up without using your hands when you can.
  • Take your joints through their full range slowly: shoulders, hips, spine, wrists.
  • Add easy strength with your own bodyweight: squats, holds, hangs if you have a bar.
  • Keep it playful. Boredom kills consistency.

A warm-up you can follow

This is a solo warm-up and movement flow filmed at the dojo.

In groups

I teach this to teams and clubs. See the movement workshop (in German) and the seminars for Jiu-Jitsu groups. If you have an injury or a medical condition, check with a professional before you start.
