Welcome to BJJ DOJO Berlin
In this blog post, we take you into a typical Jiu-Jitsu training session in our dojo. This post is accompanied by an insightful video that captures the essence of Jiu-Jitsu training with Rodrigo Fernandes, a second Dan black belt in BJJ.
The Structure of Jiu-Jitsu Training
Jiu-Jitsu training is a comprehensive process that includes warming up, technique training, and sparring, also known as ‘rolls’. The training begins with a universal greeting, ‘Oss’, a term of Japanese origin. The session continues with joint warm-ups, followed by specific movement exercises to improve physical performance and coordination.
Technique Training with Rodrigo
After the warm-up, the technique training begins. Rodrigo, an experienced expert in BJJ, introduces new techniques and solidifies already known ones. The training environment encourages questions, helping to clear up any theoretical doubts. During the training, practical questions arise, promoting a supportive atmosphere where egos are left at the door. With his attentive and focused approach, Rodrigo helps students refine their techniques, making the learning process super fun.
Students’ Experiences
One of the students, Camilla, shares her experience: “Before I started Jiu-Jitsu, I already had experience with martial arts. But I find Jiu-Jitsu to be a unique blend of mental and physical work. When I spar, I’m fully focused on the moment and not distracted by everyday problems. It’s a very enriching experience.”
David, another student, emphasizes the mental and physical benefits of BJJ. He says, “Indeed, BJJ offers many mental and physical benefits. You train parts of the body you rarely exercise, and the interaction with other bodies makes this sport quite healthy because it’s natural. Unlike, for instance, lifting weights, as seen in a woman with a black belt. I’ve seen her feet bend like hands again. It was fascinating to me how the body has returned to its original function.”
Rodrigo’s View on Jiu-Jitsu
Rodrigo shares his perspective on what makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu special. He believes it’s about handling pressure, learning to stay calm under pressure, and problem-solving. He says, “Self-defense is a matter of body movement. So when you learn to be in your body, understand your surroundings, and effectively use leverage, movement, and balance, you automatically learn to defend yourself.”
End of the Training Session
The training session concludes with rolling, where Rodrigo divides the students into respective weight groups. The learned techniques are solidified during the rolls, and the students develop a feel for the fight. The session not only improves physical fitness but also strengthens character and self-confidence and promotes peaceful conflict resolution.
